Welcome
With OS X, Apple has created an operating system
full of possibilities. Apple Computer's OS X (pronounced OS ten) represents
a quantum leap in computing power for the Macintosh platform.
Based
on Free BSD (UNIX), and borrowing from technologies developed at NeXT,
Apple and the UNIX community, OSX brings a truly modern operating system
to the Mac. It provides
- protected memory
- multithreading
- true multi-user support
- improved networking
This site is designed to provide a repository for systems administrators and people who support OS X at the University of Michigan. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide of how to configure your system, but rather to provide guidance as to how others have approached installing OS X and possibly what things to avoid. You can navigate this site sequentially or use our table of contents page as a starting point.
This is a user supported site, and we encourage anyone who uses it to contribute. If you see a particular guide missing, please write it up and submit it. (Click here for instructions on how to format and submit an article for this site.)
